Day of Russian military glory: Victory Day in the Battle of Kursk
On August 23, Russia celebrates one of it’s days of military glory, events that had a strong meaning for state and its people. Todays the Day of military glory of Russia – is a Day of the defeat of Nazi troops in the Battle of Kursk in 1943.
The Battle of Kursk was decisive in ensuring the radical change in the course of the Great Patriotic War. Hitler Command planned to hold a major offensive in the summer of 1943, to seize the strategic initiative and turn the tide of war in their favor. For this military operation, codenamed “Citadel” was developed and approved in April 1943.
Having information about the preparation of the German fascist troops for the offensive, the Supreme Command decided to temporarily go on the defensive and on the Kursk salient in the defensive battle to bleed the shock of the enemy group. Thus, it was planned to create favorable conditions for transition of Soviet troops in the offensive, and then in the overall strategic approach. Developing the onslaught of Soviet ground troops, backed by air strikes from the air armies and Long-Range Aviation, to August 23, 1943 threw the enemy back to the west to 140-150 kilometers, liberated Orel, Belgorod and Kharkov.
Wehrmacht lost in the Battle of Kursk 30 elite divisions, including seven panzer, more than 500 thousand soldiers and officers, 1,5 thousand tanks, over 3700 aircraft, 3000 guns. Soviet losses surpassed German – they amounted to 863 000 people, including 254 thousand deadweight. Under the Kursk, the Red Army lost about six thousand tanks. After the Battle of Kursk, the balance of forces on the front has changed dramatically in favor of the Red Army, which provided her favorable conditions for the deployment of a common strategic offensive.
In memory of the heroic victory of the Soviet troops in this battle, and in memory of the dead, set the Day of Military Glory in Russia, and in Kursk have memorial complex “Kursk”, dedicated to one of the key battles of the Great Patriotic War.
